Procedure
Abscess drainage
Indications:
All abscesses require drainage.
What the procedure entails:
An incision is made on the skin surface directly over the abscess. Once the abscess cavity has been entered the contents are drained and the cavity rinsed with saline or a suitable rinse. The cavity is then plugged with a swab soaked with an antimicrobial agent. The plug is removed the next day before discharge. Your wound will not be stitched closed and will need to heal from the inside to the skin surface. This greatly reduces the chances of reformation of the abscess.
Duration of the procedure:
Incision and drainage of the abscess are usually 30-45 minutes.
